Aston Villa earned their first three points of the campaign as goals from Samir Carruthers and Malcolm Melvin were enough, despite a spirited second-half fightback from the Scottish side.

Aston Villa finally got their NextGen campaign up and running last night with a 2-1 victory over Scottish side Celtic. It was a tale of the old clichéd two halves of football as Aston Villa were highly impressive in the first half only to then be pegged back during a second half where Celtic came very close to snatching a point from the game.

Aston Villa had come in the game on zero points after defeats to Sporting Lisbon and PSV Eindhoven in their previous ties and Samir Carruthers vowed for a more attacking approach from the Young Villains in their all-British encounter.

The first goal came after delightful wing-play from Callum Robinson who commited Celtic players before delivering a cross for Carruthers to caress into the back of the net on the volley after 20 minutes.

Aston Villa continued to press in the early stages and that pressure told on the Glasgow side when Malcolm Melvin finished with aplomb just 15 minutes later to give the English side a two-goal advantage.

The second half however was all the more difficult for Aston Villa as Celtic flooded forward in search of comeback goals and it did not take long for them to find one when Darnell Fisher’s cross was latched onto by Jackson Irvine who lashed home to set up a nervy finish to the game for Aston Villa.

Sean Verity’s side started to go deeper and deeper into their own half as The Young Bhoys started to fly forward with menace and Craig Hill had to make a magnificent save with 15 minutes on the clock to deny Joseph Chalmers the chance of equalising.

Celtic came even closer not long after when Denny Johnstone’s effort hit the post as Celtic continued to push for an elusive equaliser.

In the end it never came and Aston Villa could congratulate themselves on a job well done; even if question marks will be raised over their second half performance.

In the other games Liverpool went down in a brave performance against Inter Milan 3-2 in Italy; Juventus were comfortable winners against PSG while there were ominous signs from Ajax as they looked imperious in a 5-0 drubbing of Norwegian side Molde. Last season’s star Victor Fischer bagged a hat-trick as they put down an early claim to the throne.
